Most Popular Posts for January 2010

Can you believe that it’s February?! January has been just a crazy pace. It really flew by. So, I’ll let you catch up on the top posts for the month of January:

  1. Why I’ll be less critical of church signs: If God can redeem me… He can redeem church signs.
  2. 5 Things I Learned at Birthing Classes: I ran into “the placenta” at this class.
  3. 5 signs you’re talking to a kook after church: Yes, this is a true encounter.
  4. More unfortunate news from our friends at Preemptive Love: We not only lost Soma this year, but also Teeba. It was quite sad. BUT – there is HOPE… once we hear from PLC, we’ll let you know who will be going to surgery!
  5. I’m very happy (at this point) where we’re headed for our ‘baby-moon’: In a little under two weeks, Abigail and I will be getting away for a little pause before the madness of “baby” comes. We’ll let everyone (all 3 of you who actually care) know where we’re headed.

which ones were your favorite?

SOMA’S SURGERY A SUCCESS, LUNG PROBLEMS KEEP HER ON MACHINE IN ICU, CHEST STILL OPENED

This is an update on baby Soma from Iraq. You can read about why we care so much about this little girl HERE. The below post is from Jeremy Courtney who is the Executive Director of PLC. Please continue to pray with us for Soma:

We do not want to be unnecessarily graphic; but do want to convey the gravity of Soma’s situation right now.

Her valve was almost completely “gone” once doctors got to it on Friday, having already cooled her body temperature to 20 degree C. The valve repair went well and we met with Dr. Sertaç Çiçek in the 6th hour of hte surgery as his team began warming her body back up t 36 degrees C.

One and a half hours later they came back out and told us that her lungs had some problems after taking her off the heart-and-lung machine and they decided to put her on “extracorporeal membrane oxygenation” (ECMO) - a machine that effectively assists or replaces the lungs. So her heart is pumping, but ECMO is oxygenating her blood right now.

In the consult he estimated that she had a 65-75% of surviving ICU, saying Soma is in “satisfactory, but critical condition.”

Today the ICU nurses attending to Soma said she had a great night in ICU and was “doing a little better than before.” She will almost certainly be on ECMO with few changes for the next few days. In the meantime, please pray for her lungs to heal, her heart to strengthen, and her mother to remain at peace.

UPDATE on baby Soma and a short introduction to another little girl…

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Friday, December 18th, 2009

As many of you have seen us document lately HERE, HERE, and HERE, our College Ministry cast the vision to help save this little girl’s life. wpid-soma_3-2009-12-18-12-02.jpg To the right is the picture of baby Soma. Here surgery is set for early January and we’re hopeful for her full recovery post-operation.

One of the things we asked from our students was to raise $7,000 for her heart surgery. To be completely honest, I really didn’t know if we’d reach this goal or not, but I knew that anything was/is possible with God. So, we tried to raise this amount…. well – we’ve been completely blown away by the initiative our students took in regards to raising the funds.

All that to say, our students raised (as of today) a total of:

$14,360.73

Is that not amazing!? But that’s not the best of the news! Because of how generous our students were/have been, we will not only be able to participate with the surgery of one little girl, but now ANOTHER!!!!! I want to introduce you to baby Teeba.

To the right is a picture of her. Is she not adorable? (yes, I just used the word “adorable” – cut me some slack, we’re having a girl myself and I’m getting used to using girly words like this). wpid-teba-headshot-2009-12-18-12-02.jpgAt any rate, we are so pumped to be able to invest in this little girl… no doubt we ended the year on a HUGE note… we’re impacting lives for the sake of the gospel and for the sake of these babies lives as well.

What can you do from here?

That’s a great question!

  1. If you have Twitter, follow Soma as she prepares for her surgery and post surgery. You should also follow PLC, Jeremy Courtney, and ME! (shameless self promotion I know).
  2. If you don’t have Twitter, go to preemptivelove.org to find out more about who we partnered with.
  3. You should add the PLC blog to your RSS reader for sure.
  4. Pray. Early January (I believe January 5th) Soma will be having her surgery. Pray that the doctors will effectively heal her heart. Early February, Teeba will also be having her surgery.
All in all, we are just overwhelmed by our students generosity and are also thankful that God allowed us to be part of such a great thing! We are saving (prayerfully) these babies physical lives and also praying towards their salvation as well. Thanks again to all who took part!

enjoy.

How You Can Save Baby Soma’s Life

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)

MEET BABY SOMA*

wpid-soma_3-2009-12-2-15-00.jpg

Soma is four months old. Her family is among the poorest in Iraq. Their home consists of two rooms with no kitchen, not even a sink. They live in a town called Kalar, which is about 3 hours south east of Suly. But that isn’t the worst of it: she has Ebstein disease – a heart defect that has caused thousands of children in Iraq to die and more than 3,000 waiting for surgery. If Soma doesn’t receive surgery in January, she will become inoperable and may not live to the age of one or two. Her parents and her older sister’s greatest hope is to see Soma’s heart healed. This is where we get to help. Right now Soma’s family is having difficulty raising funds for her heart surgery. So, we want to partner with her family and PLC so that Soma may receive this critical, potential life-saving surgery. This is where we have the opportunity to touch lives for the sake of the gospel in Iraq.

As a College Ministry, we’re hoping to raise the $7,000 that it will cost to give Soma this much needed heart surgery.

7 ways YOU CAN help Soma

  1. give :: each week, we will take up money and all of it will go directly to Soma.
  2. pray :: ask the Father to provide for Soma.
  3. join a small group :: each group will be collecting as a group to give & to spread the word to friends about Soma.
  4. donate :: you can give in honor of a friend or family member as a gift for Soma.
  5. go to preemptivelove.org :: for more info about what they do.
  6. visit n. iraq :: see Soma and many others during the summer.
  7. Christmas at the Criners :: during the annual Christmas party, we will be collecting funds for Soma.

Send all checks here:
