The Difficulty of Preaching

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Thursday, March 10th, 2011

I’ve been invited to preach at our two main worship services this coming Sunday. It’s a great joy to be given the opportunity to preach at our church, and my rule of thumb is to never turn down an opportunity from my Pastor. As part of my prep, I came across this article from William H. Willimon titled, “Voice Lessons: Learning to Preach” and found it humbling and challenging.

He reflects on the movie The King’s Speech, which is about King George VI of England, a miserably shy, stammering man who is thrust unwillingly onto the world stage. Here’s a quote that stuck out to me:

As king, George was forced to read aloud other people’s words as if they were his own. We preachers speak not because we need to get something off our chests but because God wants to say something to God’s people.

Sometimes I’m invited to “just share what’s on your heart.” Alas, as an ordained spokesperson for the gospel, I’m not free to engage in such self-indulgence. Left to my own devices, I might say what I’m really thinking—but the church could care less about what I’m thinking. The pressing question: “Is there any word from the Lord?“

Prayerfully, I might be used by God to deliver his message to His people.

How I’m able to justify staying in the shower longer each morning

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

I’m able to justify staying in the shower longer each morning because of this one thing:

I preach to myself rather than sing to myself.

People do all kinds of weird things in the shower, one of which is sing… but I’ve found that I can’t remember all the words to most songs and therefore make up all kinds of words that quickly irritate my wife… she also doesn’t appreciate my shower singing voice.

Therefore, I preach – for my sermons tend to be a lot longer than my songs.

Can you sum up your 40 minute talk in less than 2 minutes?

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)

If you can’t, you’re not an effective communicator.

As a teacher or communicator to any group of people, I think too often we get caught up in appeal of hearing our own voices. I think for some, they think that if they say more, they’ll actually say more… when in reality, by saying more you are probably saying less. This played out for me this week when Abigail, my wife, asked me a question about a talk I’m doing for our college students. Knowing I didn’t have a lot of time, I summed it up in about 40 seconds – and it actually helped her!

Here are some tips in preparation for a talk:

  1. If you can’t say what you need to say in less than 2 minutes, what are you actually saying?
  2. People only remember one (maybe two) things you say when you speak; so why do you have 9 points to your sermon?
  3. If you can’t tweet it, delete it. Say what you’re going to say in 140 characters; if unable, rethink it.
  4. Always try to find ways to communicate depth simply.
  5. Say what you need to say; but find different ways to say it and people will remember it more often.
enjoy.

Reflections from Sunday

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Monday, July 13th, 2009

This morning I had the opportunity to preach for the two main worship services at First Woodway. It was a joy to preach and the response from our people was quite overwhelming. My Dad and Mom came from Ennis along with Granddaddy and Bobbie; which was a blast. For them to come and hear me preach was a huge blessing for me… but I think they find more joy in hearing me preach than I do actually preaching!

Below are some of my reflections from the two services:

•calling people to repent of their righteousness is a very difficult… but very rewarding.
•there is a huge difference in feel between the first service and the second service… not a bad feel, just different.
•when adults come to you in tears confessing their sin, you know the Spirit moved.
•’In Christ Alone’ is one of my favorite songs… no really.
•I’m finding more people every day who love Calvin & Spurgeon & Owen & Edwards… and it excites my soul.
•in the end our very best thoughts will never compare to You.
•having a loving wife is the best thing a pastor/preacher/minister can have.
•having family in the service is an added bonus and joy to me…
•Wearing a sweater on a Sunday morning is a really bad idea… but better than wearing a suit!
•the Holy Spirit is te only One who can turn the most crusty hearts towards Jesus.
•the Gospel matters.
•may we accept our depravity so that we might understand God’s fabulous grace.

What I’m Preaching This Sunday

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

A couple of weeks ago, my Pastor asked me if I could preach on July 12th. It’s always an honor to fill his pulpit on any given Sunday, especially since he’s been at First Woodway longer then I’ve been alive. (yes – reread that sentence).

I realized it yesterday, but most of the senior staff won’t even be at church this Sunday – so it’s pretty much the ‘C’ Team being asked to fill in for the starters. At any rate, I’m pretty pumped about it since I get about once a year to preach to the entire congregtion. The Lord had given me some specific things to share and I can’t wait. But it’s funny, because if I get to preach once a year you’d think I’d be preparing the entire year – but it really doesn’t work that way. He’s laid some things on my heart THIS week that have challenged me, humbled me, and encouraged me. Needless to say – I’m learning tons.

Anytime I have the opportunity to preach people will ask: “what are you going to talk about?” and my constant answer has been “sin & Jesus.” For some reason, this gets a perplexed look from people and I’m not sure why… what else is there to talk about on Sunday mornings than the gospel? Sadly, on so many occasions the gospel is the last thing people talk about on Sundays. So, I’m looking forward to his Sunday…

…my aim is to talk about sin and to rejoice in the gospel.

Thursday Night Reflections

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Tonight was the last night of Remedy Camp. It’s bitter sweet because I love the opportunity to be with the kids and share with them the gospel | but I sure do miss my wife. But, here are my reflections from this last night of worship:

•I love to teach and preach from the Scriptures.
•reminding students (yourself) that sin is broken is freeing.
•examine yourself now because one day you’ll stand before Jesus and he will examine you and you won’t be able to hide.
•despite our deepest weaknesses Christ is STILL stronger.
•reminding students Scripture is better than trying to make them feel better about themselves.
•watching students pray for one another is humbling and exciting.
•knowing that lives have been eternally changed this week is humbling.
•I miss my wife. (this was actually one of my first thougthts when I finished tonight).

Wednesday Night Reflections

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Below are some of my reflections from the worship service here at Camp Remedy. It’s been an incredible time thus far with the students. Like I said, these are some of my thoughts post service:

•singing songs about God & his glory stirs my heart.
•asking students to repent when they don’t want to is like leading a dog to water and trying to make it drink.
•so many students have hatred for their fathers – so we must tell them to not hate their fathers rather forgive their fathers just as they’ve been forgiven by the heavenly father.
•the moment you expect God to work a specific way he will always move differently & uniquely.
•seeing a new believer worship causes the angles to rejoice.
•speaking at camps is the most exciting yet exhausting thing we do.
•when you speak at youth camps and adults are moved by the Holy Spirit – you know God was here.
•preaching can feel like a lonely endeavor except that the Holy Spirit is with you… we MUST not forget this.
•students weeping in the arms of their youth minister is evidence of God’s grace.
•oh how He loves us; oh how He loves how He loves us.
•an adult sponser to me in tears: “my daughter & I haven’t been on good terms for a year – and tonight we reconciled. thank you.”
•good good night.

Tuesday Night Reflections

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Tonight was a sweet night of worship at Camp Remedy here in New Mexico. Below are some of my reflections from the night:

•asking people to repent requires you to be repentant
•repenting publically is the being a good shepherd.
•no matter what we plan, God’s plan will prevail.
•no matter how weak we find ourselves to be, he is still stronger.
•he is risen & there is great cause or us to rejoice.
•music can only take us so far for your word being proclaimed changes lives for eternity.
•yelling & shouting & weeping with conviction is good… when the weight behind it is Jesus & his love.
•being led by the Holy Spirit is the best game plan you can have.
•seeing kids broken | confessing | repenting | worshiping | & coming to know Jesus for the first time stirs my affections for the Lord.
