A letter to my daughter

Dear Adele,

You turned 4 months old yesterday – it seems like yesterday I held you in my arms for the first time and all you did was cry, and then proceed to poop all over me. It’s true what they say about parenthood; it is the most stressful blessing ever.

Each day I’m reminded of God’s generosity towards us. From our struggle to conceive (although very small compared to others), to our fear of raising a girl, to our joy in our lives now lived with you. You’ve adjusted well to our lives… and I would say that we’ve adjusted too.

I love you sweet cheeks. I never want you to doubt that. But I need you to know two additional things: 1) I love your mother very much. I will always love her more than I love you and will try my hardest to demonstrate my love for her in unique ways that will probably embarrass you… 2) I love our God more. I need you to know this. I need you to see this in how we live our lives. You may never come to faith – and that has been something that has haunted me every moment I open my Bible; every time I pray; every time we pray with you before (or sometimes as) you sleep. This being said, you will be given every opportunity to see the glory of God displayed in our family. You may not want anything to do with faith or Jesus or his gospel – but I’ve committed to reveal and live the gospel message out in front of you. My prayer is that you’ll never be able to say that you never saw the gospel of grace displayed before you.

I want our lives to be bent towards the gospel… maybe even walk with a limp like Jacob did after wrestling with God. I want you to know what matters most to us – but not to assume that we’re always going to be doing that. Sometimes the things that matter most to us aren’t what they should be. Sometimes they’re pagan. Sometimes they’re self-seeking. Sometimes they’re self-exalting… and when you see that, I’m praying that by God’s grace they are exposed for what they are; sin. I’m praying that we will be open and honest about our failures with you and quickly change course so that you might again see the gospel of grace lived out.

Adele – maybe that’s what I’m praying against: hypocrisy. This is so plaguing us as followers of Jesus. I’m praying that as a family, we are so intimate with the Father, that the Holy Spirit will quickly draw to our attention our callousness. May we be a family that as often as possible we make most of Jesus, his cross, and a life lived for him.

So, today, on your four month birthday (man I feel like a Jr. High relationship counting how many months we’ve been together…) I’m praying for you, for us. I’m praying that we would not be like our fathers, “a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God” (Ps. 78:8). And I’m praying that you will one day embrace the most sacred, glorious fact I’ve ever know: Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ is coming again – and this Christ loves me, loves your mother, and loves you too. This love compels us to live differently, and my hope is that you live that way too.

Your daddy

Will you fast with me on Thursday, April 8th, on behalf of Justin Cofield?

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

I received a note from some friends in regards to a friend of mine Justin Cofield. Justin & I have done some events together, and I’ll be honest, you can’t find a better guy. Not only that, but the guys in the band are just as great. Hearts for Jesus; passion to lead others in worship; integrity. These are things I think about when I think of leading with Justin Cofield Band.

Well, I got this note and thought I would invite you guys in on the praying for me friend. Will you interceded for him? Will you pray for Jana & Jaxon as the walk through this difficult season? Please read the note and let me know in the comments section if you’ll be praying.

Hi gentlemen -

This is Kyle Lent, from The Justin Cofield Band. I’m writing on behalf of myself and Aaron Cauble, our drummer, to ask you guys to be in prayer for Justin. If you don’t know the whole story, I’ll give you the short version: he hurt his back pretty badly in February and has been lying on the couch for the past month with two herniated discs. A steroid injection about 2 weeks ago has not helped much and he will be visiting a neurosurgeon on Thursday, April 8th, to see what the next step will be.

I (and Aaron) write to all of you guys because we know you are men of God whom we have worked with and would love to have your help and support on this. In short, we are fasting for Justin on Thursday, and would be honored if anyone who wants to join in will. Many of you travel, either in a speaking or worship role, and you know the terrible consequences that could potentially come from this. Justin provides for his family by traveling and standing in front of a lot of people.

No need to respond to this unless you want to (we will be happy to answer any questions). We are just asking for urgent prayer and petition for Justin this week as we figure out the next step. If any of you who are pastors/youth pastors/etc. would feel comfortable asking others to join us, we would love that.

We also know the power of social media. Please feel free to forward this, tweet this, blog this, Facebook this as much as you want, and direct people to our website: thejcb.com, where you can find more information about this.

Aaron and I thank you guys for your support of our ministry over the years, and you receive this message because we trust you and love you. What a great week, just after Easter, to see resurrection.

Thanks again,

Kyle Lent

Please visit their website and buy every CD they’ve every made. Follow them on Twitter. Email the band at community@thejustincofieldband.com so they know you’ll be praying too. Pray.

pray for healing. thanks.

Great Links / Reads

Occasionally I run across articles that I think are worth your time. Here are a few:

  1. It’s Monday. Be Careful, Pastor. – An article, really for anyone in ministry/on staff, but this is wonderful warning for how to approach Monday’s.
  2. Can You Pastor Using Twitter? – A great number of reasons why Pastors should use Twitter to reach more people with the Gospel.
  3. Some Things you can do for Matt Chandler – Some of you may be unaware, but Matt Chandler on Thanksgiving day suffered a bad seizure and they have since found a small “mass” on his frontal lobe… this is a post that shares how you can minister to this man that I respect a T-O-N.
  4. Pray for your Pastor - If there is only ONE thing you can do for your pastor, do this… please.

Most Popular for October

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Monday, November 2nd, 2009

No, I cannot believe it either: October is over. That being said, here are the most popular reads from the blog this month:

  1. Abby’s Craftiness – apparently, everyone is amazed at Abigail’s ability to make things from felt, string, and the two hands God gave her. I’ll say this – I’m not so much amazed as much as I am impressed with her. She’s going to be a great mom!
  2. Early Prayers – this was a post I did of a prayer I prayed (and have been praying) for our little girl. We still don’t have a name, for now we’ll just call her “Daddy’s girl.” ;-)
  3. Can you sum up your 40 minute talk in less than 2 minutes - everyone seemed to really like this post because well… it was about keeping things to the point.
  4. Boy or Girl? Take the Poll – a ton of you took the poll… 60% of you were right.
  5. No Phone Friday – this was a short post sharing that I was giving up the phone for this particular Friday… so if you called me on this day I didn’t answer and I didn’t notice.
At the time of this posting, 20,376 of you have visited the site. That’s a small town. Thanks for reading.

enjoy.

Early Prayers

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Many of you know that we’re having a baby, a baby girl in fact. It’s quite exciting and I am filled with anticipation over the whole deal. But having and raising a child is extremely terrifying (at least to me it is). Maybe it isn’t so much of a terrifying thing to raise a child, rather its weighty. Raising a child is not something I am taking lightly nor do I want to take it lightly…

What this weight has birthed in me though are specific prayers for our little girl. Here is my prayer from this morning… it’s not long, but I thought I’d share it with you:

Father in heaven, I pray that I will share with our little girl how great You are and how great You have been towards us. How greatly loved we are by You; how You can be trusted in all things; how You will always fight for the hearts of Your people; and how she can fit into your bigger plan by trusting in You; trusting that You are good & faithful towards Your people; and because of who You are, we love You. In Jesus name, amen.

enjoy

No Phone Friday

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Friday, October 16th, 2009

Periodically, I’ll turn the ole’ cell phone off for a day. Consider it my “fasting” from the phone. If you’re not familiar with the discipline of fasting, I would say; read your Bible. ;-)

What I mean is that any time you read Jesus’ instructions/comments on prayer, it is closely tied together with fasting. Fasting is a spiritual discipline in which you abstain from something so that you might direct your attention on Jesus. You may fast from food, water, people, work, Facebook, Twitter, TV, or technology all together! By fasting from these things, you then use the time you would regularly spend doing those things praying, or reading Scripture, etc. It’s a spiritual discipline, and one I think should be part of every follower of Jesus.

Therefore, don’t try to call me on Friday – it’s “no phone Friday” for me. I’m taking a break from the ole’ phone so that I might focus my thoughts on that which matters… namely, Jesus. I don’t tell you this to boast – rather I tell you this so that you might consider giving something up for a time, fast if you will, so that you might be drawn into a deeper walk with Jesus.

enjoy

Open Email to our College Leadership

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Monday, August 17th, 2009

Below is an email I sent to my leadership.  I wrote the email late the other night but sent it to them just last week… enjoy:

I’m sitting in my house and it’s late. I won’t tell you how late, I’ll leave that up to your own imagination… but I should be asleep.

I can’t sleep.

My thoughts keep running over and over of what this next year might mean… of what this next year might look like in our college ministry… of what this next year might look like for you… of what this next year might look like for me, for Abigail (& even ole’ Ebenezer)… of what this next year might look like for Baylor… of what this next year might look like for Waco & our world. And thus:

I cannot sleep.

What would happen if our friends who we thought knew Jesus might for the first time come to grips with the reality that they actually don’t know him and then place their faith in him?

What would happen if we saw people begin to confess things they’ve kept hidden all their lives?

What would happen if we cared enough about our friends; roommate; classmates; professors; frat-mates; sorority sisters; boyfriends/ girlfriends; parents; & siblings that we shared w/ them that which matters most in life… Jesus.  And not just because we felt obligated to do it; not because we felt forced to do it; not because we felt like we had to BUT because Jesus matters that much to us.

What would happen if we couldn’t sleep because so many great and awesome things were happening in our ministry and amongst us as a leadership?

Would that not be awesome?

Will you join me in praying for that to happen?

I think the Lord has some crazy awesome things in store for us this next year and I’m totally stoked (yeah, I said stoked) to see how the Lord is going to play these things out among us.

Now remember; we start at 10:15am on August 23rd.

Drag. Pull. Plead with. Drive. Con. Do whatever it takes to get your friends to church when the new semester begins.

If you don’t invite your lost friends to church how will they ever hear about Jesus?
Will they hear about Jesus from you?
If you bring your friends to our church, they will hear about Jesus… I promise you that.

I want to pack out the college hour room.
I want us to have to create new small groups on the first Sunday.
I want us to have too many people desire to serve internationally & locally on some type of mission endeavor this next year.
I want us to have to plan a baptism service the first Sunday this semester because so many of your friends come to faith.
I want us to have a space problem.
I want us to dream and dream big of what God might do in and through us.
I want us to worship like crazy on that Sunday.
I want us to be willing to look foolish for Jesus’ sake on that Sunday & all of them to come…
may we not hold back together… may we not hold back.

I want to be amazed… do you?

Whew!  As you can see, I’m totally stoked that you’re a little over a week away from being here in Waco again. I’ve missed you. Our church has missed you.
Please come soon.

love&live the gospel,

criner

Great Links/Reads this Week

Ed Stetzer shares some wonderful questions for accountability.   He provides some really convicting questions that I think we will try to implement this year – in fact, I’m going to implement it with my accountability partner here in Waco.  (he doesn’t know it yet).

Perry Noble gives us three dangerous prayers. This dude is legit.  Will you pray these with me?

A Wall Street Journal article on why Sunday School’s are closing at many churches in the country.  I have my reasons as to why it’s declining in some churches but I’ll hold those cards close to my chest.

The Resurgence did a post of all the books John Piper has ever written… could I just write one?

enjoy.

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

I know, I know, June isn’t technically over, but I wanted you to at least be aware of the top clicks for June. So, here they are:

  1. Bad Church Posters – we found this poster at a church that a friend works at… needles to say we had a fun time laughing at it.
  2. 5 Prayers for High School Graduates – I preached at FBC Alvarado and it went surprisingly well!  God was very gracious to me.
  3. Spencer Pratt & Heidi Montag – a.k.a. Speidi Reflections – My friend Jason Boyett asked me a few questions… I responded.
  4. The Danger of Twitter – I explained some common dangers of Twitter.
  5. Why I’ve Avoided Twitter – I gave in – obviously… HERE.

enjoy.

My Soul is Troubled

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Friday, June 12th, 2009

John 12:27: “Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’ But for this purpose I have come to this hour.” (ESV)

Jesus here is headed to the cross… the most terrifyingly beautiful point in history. ever. Charles Spurgeon says this, “If Jesus looked out of himself for protection, how much more must we, his erring followers, do so!”

I mean, you and I are better than Jesus right?
You and I don’t need help… right?
You and I are self sufficient… right?

I think this is one of my biggest frustrations in life right now: my self-sufficiency… my soul is troubled. Terribly terribly troubled. By not praying further hits home my brazenness sinfulness to think that I can do all things apart from Christ.

My soul is troubled. And what shall I say? Protect me. Guard me. Surround me from the bent… And to you be the glory forevermore.

enjoy.
