3 reasons why you should read Mark Batterson’s new book Primal

In November, I was informed by Random House that I was invited to read and then review Mark Batterson’s book Primal. Let me just say this, I was ecstatic! To be invited to do such a thing is an honor and I count it a great joy to be asked to do such a thing! His two previous (In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day & Wild Goose Chase) were books that have helped shape some of my dreams of what it means to live a life following Jesus. Both these books challenged my thinking on many accounts and so I entered into reading this book with great hope.wpid-51mO7sG16hL._SS500_-2009-12-21-17-35.jpg

Let me just say this: I wasn’t disappointed. I know that sounds like major brown-nosing, but really. I enjoyed almost every page of this book. I wanted to read this all the first day I received the book in the mail (December 11th) but I kept putting it down to write out more dreams I had as a college pastor, as a father, and as a person. The book really isn’t long at all – 192 pages – but they’re small, manageable pages. What I mean is that before you know it – you’ve read a chapter and you’re hungry for the next one!

Here’s a couple of quotes that stopped me in my tracks:

“… our generation has conveniently forgotten how inconvenient it can be to follow in the footsteps of Christ.” (It’s true – our generation is narcissistic enough to the point that we’re out for our own comfort rather than sanctification to become like Jesus.)

“The most important decisions you make are pre-decisions. Pre-decisions are the decisions you make before you have to make the decision.” (There are some things that if unplanned, will never be. So, decide today what you need to do and you’re more likely to do it.)

“Some people spend their entire lives getting ready for what God wants them to do. But they never end up doing it because they never come to the realization that they’ll never be ready.” (This made me stop in the middle of reading and journal for several hours… seriously. I’m always thinking of reasons for NOT doing what God is birthing in me rather than going and doing it! So, GO AND DO IT!!)

All this being said, here are 3 reasons why you should read this book:

  1. You need to recapture the Great Commandment
  2. You need to rethink how you currently live your life
  3. You need to recreate how you communicate the gospel in everyday life

This book will help you along the way…
What does all this mean?

I think this should be the first book you read this upcoming year. No seriously. It could be exactly what you need to start 2010 with some big dreams for the next decade you might be granted from our good God.

The Silence of the Holy Spirit

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)

Mark Batterson shared a little bit about how the Holy Spirit is silent at time… go ahead: READ IT HERE.

I’ve been having some difficulties hearing from the Holy Spirit in recent days.  Specifically in regards to a camp I’m preaching at in NM.  Let’s revisit the verse in John:
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

Doesn’t seem that difficult or even really that complicated.  But – it’s in wanting to hear from the Lord that we’re I am confronted with my own sin.  Mark says it this way:
“if you cannot hear the voice of God maybe it’s because you aren’t willing to hear everything He has to say?”

So, for the sake of being honest, here are three things I’ve been dealing with lately in my personal life that I think are preventing me from hearing the Holy Spirit.

  • Complaining: It’s not that I’m ungrateful for the job I have… but the complaining (to a select few) reveals my ungrateful heat & spirit.  Complaining usually comes out from a heart that thinks it deserves something in reality doesn’t.  What do I deserve? is a question I’m constantly asking myself.  I have been given so much (loving wife, wonderful job, great friends, etc)… so, I should must be grateful.  Complaining in my life really brings out the fact that I’ve forgotten the Gospel… for it’s remembering the Gospel that we remember what we deserve and also what Christ has so graciously done for us. I don’t want to assume you know the Gospel – READ THIS.
  • Inattention: This is specifically in regards to my wife, Abigail.  It never is intentionally not paying attention… it simply creeps up expectantly.  I must remind myself that how I love her affects everything about us.  Seriously.  How I treat Abby affects E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G.  So, on my way home, I picked up some flowers as a simple reminder to her that I love her.  For evidence, you can see them HERE.
  • Productivity (lack thereof): This could be substituted as laziness, but I’ll keep it to lack of productivity.  I’ve actually gotten a ton of things done, but many of the things I’ve done have been all the wrong things.  I don’t need to design sermon logos.  I’ll leave that up to someone else.  I must do what is most important: prayer and the ministry of the Word (Acts 6:4).  There is a great blog on Biblical Productivity and you can find it HERE.  Or, you can download the pdf file of the same online resource HERE.

May by God’s grace we strive to be honest enough with ourselves and others that we can share openly about our struggles.

enjoy.

I read 60+ blogs.

Today I asked myself this question:
How many blogs do I read?

It’s a question I’m sure most of you ask yourself all the time.  To be honest, the number is actually closer to 70 but that sounds really really excessive.  Of those said blogs, not everyone updates on a regular basis; some update daily; most update monthly.  I’m doing my best to be regular.

In order to stay in tune with all these blogs, I us an RSS feeder called NewsGator so that I don’t have to go to each blog, rather NewsGator feeds it automatically.  It’s very similar to a Google Reader account (which I’ve heard by Trae to be the best), but I use NewsGator since it works with my iPhone.   I thought about sharing all of the blogs I read, but I’ll leave it to three I added today that I’ll be regularly feasting upon:

  • Perry Noble – Senior Pastor of NewSpring Church in South Carolina.  Very good/practical leadership stuff.
  • Mark Batterson – Lead Pastor of National Community Church in Washington DC.  His two books: In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day & Wild Goose Chase are worthy reads.
  • Tony Morgan – Chief Strategic Officer at NewSpring Church in South Carolina.  I picked up his book: Killing Cockroaches & am in love… don’t tell Abigail.

That’s it for now.

enjoy
