You can read more about this HERE.
You can read about how the Captain “tripped” onto a lifeboat before everyone evacuated HERE.
You can read the transcript between the Captain and the Coast Guard HERE.

In the end, people lost their lives and families lost their loved ones, simply because when disaster approached (due to apparent tomfoolery)- the Captain, who is to be the leader of a ship, chose to seek out his own good rather than the good of the people he was in charge of.

This story would be evince of poor leadership, judgment, and integrity. I hope that when I’m faced with a moment of crisis, I would be faithful to do what I had committed to do. I hope that for you as well.

Questions I asked my staff

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Thursday, October 14th, 2010

The other night, our staff took some time to sit around the fire pit in our backyard and just talk. I think at times, it’s easy to fool yourself in ministry and assume everyone is doing great, or that they’re having an awesome season of life… But I know better. I think we all know better.

So, I posed a couple of questions to the staff for us to talk through and discover together:

How is God working powerfully in your life right now?
Are there prayers that have been answered recently?

It was so encouraging to hear from each person and affirm them in what God was doing in them. I then took time to read 1 Corinthians 15:58 as a springboard to encourage them:

“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”

I pointed out two things to them:

1. We’re loved apart from our performance in ministry. Proof? Jesus’ finished work on the cross!!
2. God is using us, us!! to advance the Kingdom. Let that sink in! God has lots of options and he has chosen by his sovereign grace to use us! Unworthy, selfish (at times) people… How great is that!?

In the end, it was a blessing to sit back and hear from each other while siting outside around a fire pit.

enjoy.

Open Email To FWCM Leadership

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Friday, August 20th, 2010

Here is a letter I sent to our leadership earlier this week:

Open Letter To FWCM Leadership

Hey Gang -

I’ve been working on this email the past couple of days – trying to figure out what to say and how to say it. It’s slowly been hitting me that THIS WEEK we (Abigail, Adele and Ebenezer) begin our fifth year of being at First Woodway. C-R-A-Z-Y.

I won’t tell you that it “seems like yesterday” because it doesn’t… it seems like forever ago that we loaded up all that we had and moved into (what is now) the Best Value American Inn across from the campus. And now, we’re here.

In thinking through all of this, I thought of three things:

1. Get Excited. The semester is upon us. It’s here. We cannot move back time, and only once in the Bible did God suspend the sun (Joshua 10:13). So, get excited. I sense it in me, but I also feel a level of excitement in you as well. Even in talking to many of you, some of you had like the “most-awesomest-coolest-God-wowing-movements-of-your-life” summers.

I don’t doubt that. I say this because I stalk you on Facebook or you’ve called to tell me these things over the phone. I honestly can’t want to hear all that God did IN and THROUGH you this summer.

If you don’t mind though, can I lob this out there for you to ponder and pray about?

What if this semester was even better?! THERE – I said it! What if this semester was even better than your summer?! What if this next year signaled in your heart and in your life a spiritual marker; a high-point you never forget; a moment in time that God captures your heart and affections for the rest of your life!?

Now THAT is something to get exited about.

Can I lob something else out there?

It can happen. In SO MANY WAYS I believe that it WILL happen. As a gentle reminder, COLLEGE HOUR 10:!5am THIS SUNDAY… get excited. Let’s embrace this movement of God together!

2. Get Prepared. I’m always of the opinion and thought that you and I should work really really hard at what we do and leave all the results up to God. Trust me… we’re working hard on our end. We’re doing our best to have all of our “ducks” in a row and working to make this the most prepared we’ve ever been… but having a website, videos, brochures, t-shirts (which are AWESOME), etc. our new series (skippingchurch.com) planned and ready really isn’t all that important to me.

There is something bigger at stake this year than just having things prepared physically… we need to be prepared spiritually.

Before the semester ended, I read to you a quote:

“Great men and women of God are great because they enjoy exceptional intimacy with their God.” – Dave Kraft

I read you this quote because honestly, this will be the most important thing for us this upcoming year. The state of our intimacy with the Lord will be primary for us. Since failure many times is unavoidable throughout the year, the one thing we don’t want to fail on is in our intimacy individually and corporately with the Lord.

So I’m pleading with you (and for myself) that we press in this year. If we fail in our intimacy with the Lord, we will fail in all the other areas of ministry. Our intimacy with Him must be at the forefront in our hearts and minds. I don’t want us to miss one moment this year that might bring honor and glory to Jesus. I don’t want us to miss one moment with each other – but more importantly, I don’t want to miss one moment with Jesus.

So – get prepared – we’ll talk more about this at Leadership Retreat (Aug. 27-28) – but take some time to begin to pray through these thing this week… and ask God to do mighty things.

3. Get Here. Here’s the facts… we need you here. We’ve already had (I believe) quite a bit of people visiting on Sunday mornings and I can’t help but be thankful for God bringing these students by… but we need you here. We need you to be praying over our room at 8AM on Sunday mornings. We need you to be praying over our students during our corporate singing. We need your prayers. We need your passion. We need your servant hearts. We need you as worshipers of Jesus.

We also need you to do everything you can to bring everyone and anyone you know to be part of what we really believe God is doing in our midst.

I mean, what would happen if because of a H-U-G-E movement from the Holy Spirit, 2, 3, 10, 50(!!) people who did not know Jesus, come to know Him the first Sunday!? What if that many wanted to become baptized! What if that didn’t happen on the first Sunday, but took place of the course of the semester? How incredible would that be to walk through that together? What would happen if because our hearts were so AWARE of the presence of the Lord, we had to stop doing what we were doing because His presence was so thick? (2 Chronicles 5).

What would happen if you and I stopped pretending we have it all together and be honest with our God and ourselves that TODAY we need the gospel… that it isn’t for those who don’t know Jesus only, but for those who DO know Him as well.

What would happen if we didn’t stay within our little circle of friends but were eager to bring others into an encounter with our Lord and God.

What would happen if we each invited just 5 people we did not know – and they came… we’d be setting off fire code violations. It could happen. Let’s get a fine this year for having too many people hunkered in to hear the Gospel and then respond to it!

I’m praying for these things. I’m hoping for these things. I believe these things. But not for our own glory or sake… but for His.

There will be many challenges this year – but I’m thankful for your service to our ministry. I’m thankful that you’re dedicating yourselves to our ministry and more importantly to Jesus.

Please join me in expecting great things from God this year.

Come quickly… come running!!

I love you… and can’t wait to worship with you.

Love&Live the Gospel,

criner

Do we really need more politicians?

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Every other Wednesday morning, I meet with a group of guys and we talk ministry, leadership, and being the type of spiritual leaders we need to be for the sake of the gospel and our world. This is a new thing for me, but something I’m really excited about. At any rate – we’re reading a book by Henry Blackaby… you know THIS GUY. We’re actually not reading his most famous book, but one that has greatly impacted me, Spiritual Leadership.

I first read this book while in college and pretty much challenged my heart to be the leader God was calling for me to be. I’m grateful to Tom Mosley for introducing me to this book. Hat-tip to Tom on this one.

I read this from the book and I thought it great in honor of President’s Day.

“Society longs for statesmen but it gets politicians. Statesmen are leaders who uphold what is right regardless of the popularity of the position. Statesmen speak out to achieve good for their people, not to win votes. Statesmen promote the general good rather than regional or personal self-interest.”

I then read a quote today from Senator Evan Bayh, the Indian Democrat who will not be seeking his third term, something that is disappointing the President and probably most of Congress (at least on the blue side).

“For some time, I have had a growing conviction that Congress is not operating as it should,” he said. “There is much too much partisanship and not enough progress. Too much narrow ideology and not enough practical problem solving.” (I took this quote from THIS ARTICLE on the NYTimes website)

I won’t dive into whether I agree with everything that Evan Bayh stands for or doesn’t stand for…that’s not what this post is about… it’s the very fact that we have too many politicians in our government and less statesmen. We need statesmen. We need states-women.

We need people who will stand up in public for what they stand for in private.

As Monday signified the day we celebrate President’s Day, might we find men and women who stand up when others refuse to. What things do you need to stand up for? I think Senator Bayh understands the reality that our Congress has missed what it means to be congress – to come together. Therefore, he found that he could no longer play the game of being a politician. Hat’s off to you Senator, hats off.

Great Links / Reads this Week

Here’s my list of blogs or articles that I think you should read. There really is no other reason why you would read these other than my recommending them… so now, we’ll see the power of my influence.

  1. Matthew Hyatt has a great post about 5 Characteristics of Weak Leaders. He does a great job of summing up weak characteristics among leaders. Many times and in many ways, leaders develop blind spots to their leadership. This is a quick check-up to consider if you’re a leader, or if you’d like to be one.
  2. If you read this article from the Gospel Coalition, you’ll know more about John Piper than he does.
  3. Have you ever wanted your coke can to have a Snap Cap so it wouldn’t become flat over time? Well, here’s you’re chance!
  4. Here is a list of really bad church names… trust me, they’re really bad.
  5. This is a news article that proposes that libraries may be dead in our schools… because of the Kindle. I’m considering switching to a Kindle… but we’ll see if I fork up the cash!

enjoy.

Most Popular for August

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Well… another month has wound up! Can you believe it’s ALREADY September!? Crazy I know. That being said, below are some of the most popular reads from this past month:

  1. Don’t Be A Brett Favre Christian has been getting a TON of hits. Probably because it has something to do with sports; but also because the title is ingenious (thanks Ben)!
  2. Open Email to Leadership was something I wrote several nights before the semester began. I decided to post it because I felt like it would be encouraging to others to see what we’re aiming for this semester with our students… I hope you’re encouraged by it – (some of the things have come true already this semester!!)
  3. Church Song Meltdown has to be one of my favorite videos of all times of my friend Ben (this is a different Ben than this Ben).
  4. I’m (still) Selling my Mac Powerbook G4 got quite a few hits… but no takers. :-( I need a bail out.
  5. Sunday Morning Reflections / 8.30.09 actually received a ton of traffic… probably because we had the MOST AWESOME Sunday in like forever! Looking forward to this upcoming Sunday!!

Well, that’s all I’ve got for now…

enjoy.

Leadership Retreat

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Friday, August 28th, 2009

We would love for you to be praying for us this weekend. When I say us, I mean the Leadership of our College Ministry. We’re going to be praying together; playing together; & they’ll hear my heart for this upcoming year…

We’ve developed a little booklet for our leadership; it’s called the Sherpa which I think is a ROCKING title that I didn’t come up with. Sherpas are traditionally people of Tibetan descent living on the southern side of the Himalaya Mountains in Nepal and Sikkim. In modern times Sherpas have achieved world renown as expert guides on Himalayan mountaineering expeditions. We want our Leadership to be Sherpa’s for the College Ministry… they’re to be guides for their peers using their gifts and experiences to lead others to new and exciting places.

This quote in the book keeps ringing in my head over and over (hence the ringing):

“Don’t rely too much on labels, for too often they are fables.” – C.H. Spurgeon

ALSO – there is the FREAKING HUGE announcement that we’ll be sharing with them in regards to our (Abigail & my) future. I’M TOTALLY STOKED about it! I’m way more STOKED about this than I was for our first Sunday. No really. I’m FREAKING PUMPED about it.

[And to those of you who think that the announcement has something to do with Abigail & I leaving First Woodway - don't be a hater - that couldn't be further from the truth. There are just some BIG things we're planning for this upcoming year - ESPECIALLY during Spring Break. It's going to be AWESOME!]

enjoy

Open Email to our College Leadership

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Monday, August 17th, 2009

Below is an email I sent to my leadership.  I wrote the email late the other night but sent it to them just last week… enjoy:

I’m sitting in my house and it’s late. I won’t tell you how late, I’ll leave that up to your own imagination… but I should be asleep.

I can’t sleep.

My thoughts keep running over and over of what this next year might mean… of what this next year might look like in our college ministry… of what this next year might look like for you… of what this next year might look like for me, for Abigail (& even ole’ Ebenezer)… of what this next year might look like for Baylor… of what this next year might look like for Waco & our world. And thus:

I cannot sleep.

What would happen if our friends who we thought knew Jesus might for the first time come to grips with the reality that they actually don’t know him and then place their faith in him?

What would happen if we saw people begin to confess things they’ve kept hidden all their lives?

What would happen if we cared enough about our friends; roommate; classmates; professors; frat-mates; sorority sisters; boyfriends/ girlfriends; parents; & siblings that we shared w/ them that which matters most in life… Jesus.  And not just because we felt obligated to do it; not because we felt forced to do it; not because we felt like we had to BUT because Jesus matters that much to us.

What would happen if we couldn’t sleep because so many great and awesome things were happening in our ministry and amongst us as a leadership?

Would that not be awesome?

Will you join me in praying for that to happen?

I think the Lord has some crazy awesome things in store for us this next year and I’m totally stoked (yeah, I said stoked) to see how the Lord is going to play these things out among us.

Now remember; we start at 10:15am on August 23rd.

Drag. Pull. Plead with. Drive. Con. Do whatever it takes to get your friends to church when the new semester begins.

If you don’t invite your lost friends to church how will they ever hear about Jesus?
Will they hear about Jesus from you?
If you bring your friends to our church, they will hear about Jesus… I promise you that.

I want to pack out the college hour room.
I want us to have to create new small groups on the first Sunday.
I want us to have too many people desire to serve internationally & locally on some type of mission endeavor this next year.
I want us to have to plan a baptism service the first Sunday this semester because so many of your friends come to faith.
I want us to have a space problem.
I want us to dream and dream big of what God might do in and through us.
I want us to worship like crazy on that Sunday.
I want us to be willing to look foolish for Jesus’ sake on that Sunday & all of them to come…
may we not hold back together… may we not hold back.

I want to be amazed… do you?

Whew!  As you can see, I’m totally stoked that you’re a little over a week away from being here in Waco again. I’ve missed you. Our church has missed you.
Please come soon.

love&live the gospel,

criner
