Summer Series: Judges

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Starting tomorrow at Church we’ll be in the book of Judges. It’s not really a “fun” book to go through… I mean, there is murder, suicide, and God essentially isn’t happy the majority of the time. That being said, there are a couple of reasons why I want us to be in this book over the summer.

1. It’s an OT book and often times the OT is largely ignored by teachers despite it being larger than the NT.
2. I want you to see Jesus in the OT… since He is The Revelation for us. What I mean by this is that we have the gift of grace and understanding because of Him. We have application and implications of Scriptures because of Jesus. So, while we have things that we learn and hear from the Holy Spirit, they will in the end bear witness about Jesus.
3. It’s a longer book, and it’s difficult in my estimation to truck through a lengthy book and maintain your attention during the school year, so we’ll bore you over the summer instead.
4. The application is fitting. There is something about learning from others mistakes that help us make the most of our time here on tins side of eternity.. I’m not saying that we can read of these stories and avoid any hardships, but I am saying that we can learn from these men and women.

So join us this Sunday as we begin our series in the book of Judges: the tragedy of our hearts. (in another post, I’ll explain the subtitle to the series)

Searching for God’s Will – a new series that begins this week!

wpid-searchingforgodswill-2010-01-9-18-00.jpg

This upcoming Sunday, we begin a new series, Searching for God’s Will. I’m pretty pumped to look at this subject as it’s probably the most confusing one amongst college students. Because we’ll only be discussing this topic for two weeks (then on to a study of 1 John) – we’ll break the two talks down to this:

January 10 – “Defining God’s Will”

January 17 – “Finding God’s Will”

Looking forward to what we’ll learn from this journey together! We’ll also have a special guest with us (hopefully) on Sunday during College Hour at 10:15am…

enjoy.

Sunday Morning Reflections / 8.30.09

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Today was quite a CRAZY day at First Woodway. The craziness really began Friday when we had our Leadership Retreat – it was simply the best one yet… no seriously – it was AWESOME – except for having to sleep on the floor at the church/eating too late/entering into the whole weekend tired/and still trying to recover on sleep.

We spent Friday night worshiping & praying together. UNbelievable time (IMO). Saturday was filled with details/planning & recovery. It was a sweet time.

Below are some of my reflections on this morning at College Hour:

-We wouldn’t be where we’re at w/o our Leadership doing what God has called them to do… LEAD.
-Ummm… When you say “FREE lunch” students come out in droves… who wouldn’t want that?
-Greg Foster & Band have done an amazing job leading us in worship through song every Sunday thus far – they need a CD or something so I can take it w/ me throughout the week.
-Having a band on Sunday mornings totally enhances what we’re doing & where we’re going to go this year in our ministry.
-We had to BRING in almost 100 additional chairs into the room – these were extra chairs due to the amount of people in College Hour.
-My wife is AMAZING. I absolutely LOVE her & her servant spirit… Sundays would not be the same w/o her.
-Just b/c you’re in a small group doesn’t mean you’re growing – it just means you’re in the best position to grow.
-Having adults serve in our ministry is so cool!
-I love that students want to stay & help clean up after a lunch… proves their servanthood.
-We want to pray expectant prayers.
-Small Groups are about your sanctification.
-You cannot do life alone.
-Understanding progressive sanctification is becoming more & more important for college students than ever.
-Could we please bring back Arrested Development?!
-Our volunteers ROCKED it… AGAIN.
-I was almost in tears laughing at the small group leaders “special talents”
-I was crying during worship as 300+ students sang w/ everything they had to Jesus… defining moment for sure.
-BTW – this is the LARGEST amount of people in College Hour at First Woodway… in 8 yrs. BLOW YOUR SOCKS AWESOME.
-I think I quoted more movies today than I have ever. Ha!
-Large cannons are cool; & so is He-Man.
-Critical Mass is the beginning of a movement.
-Any time you have the FULL support of your Senior Pastor, the table will be set for success.
-At some point you have to grow up… & today our ministry gre up.

I’m so looking forward to this next week. Brett Gibson will be speaking & I’m totally pumped that he gets to share his vision for missons this upcoming year.

enjoy.

Leadership Retreat

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Friday, August 28th, 2009

We would love for you to be praying for us this weekend. When I say us, I mean the Leadership of our College Ministry. We’re going to be praying together; playing together; & they’ll hear my heart for this upcoming year…

We’ve developed a little booklet for our leadership; it’s called the Sherpa which I think is a ROCKING title that I didn’t come up with. Sherpas are traditionally people of Tibetan descent living on the southern side of the Himalaya Mountains in Nepal and Sikkim. In modern times Sherpas have achieved world renown as expert guides on Himalayan mountaineering expeditions. We want our Leadership to be Sherpa’s for the College Ministry… they’re to be guides for their peers using their gifts and experiences to lead others to new and exciting places.

This quote in the book keeps ringing in my head over and over (hence the ringing):

“Don’t rely too much on labels, for too often they are fables.” – C.H. Spurgeon

ALSO – there is the FREAKING HUGE announcement that we’ll be sharing with them in regards to our (Abigail & my) future. I’M TOTALLY STOKED about it! I’m way more STOKED about this than I was for our first Sunday. No really. I’m FREAKING PUMPED about it.

[And to those of you who think that the announcement has something to do with Abigail & I leaving First Woodway - don't be a hater - that couldn't be further from the truth. There are just some BIG things we're planning for this upcoming year - ESPECIALLY during Spring Break. It's going to be AWESOME!]

enjoy

Open Email to our College Leadership

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Monday, August 17th, 2009

Below is an email I sent to my leadership.  I wrote the email late the other night but sent it to them just last week… enjoy:

I’m sitting in my house and it’s late. I won’t tell you how late, I’ll leave that up to your own imagination… but I should be asleep.

I can’t sleep.

My thoughts keep running over and over of what this next year might mean… of what this next year might look like in our college ministry… of what this next year might look like for you… of what this next year might look like for me, for Abigail (& even ole’ Ebenezer)… of what this next year might look like for Baylor… of what this next year might look like for Waco & our world. And thus:

I cannot sleep.

What would happen if our friends who we thought knew Jesus might for the first time come to grips with the reality that they actually don’t know him and then place their faith in him?

What would happen if we saw people begin to confess things they’ve kept hidden all their lives?

What would happen if we cared enough about our friends; roommate; classmates; professors; frat-mates; sorority sisters; boyfriends/ girlfriends; parents; & siblings that we shared w/ them that which matters most in life… Jesus.  And not just because we felt obligated to do it; not because we felt forced to do it; not because we felt like we had to BUT because Jesus matters that much to us.

What would happen if we couldn’t sleep because so many great and awesome things were happening in our ministry and amongst us as a leadership?

Would that not be awesome?

Will you join me in praying for that to happen?

I think the Lord has some crazy awesome things in store for us this next year and I’m totally stoked (yeah, I said stoked) to see how the Lord is going to play these things out among us.

Now remember; we start at 10:15am on August 23rd.

Drag. Pull. Plead with. Drive. Con. Do whatever it takes to get your friends to church when the new semester begins.

If you don’t invite your lost friends to church how will they ever hear about Jesus?
Will they hear about Jesus from you?
If you bring your friends to our church, they will hear about Jesus… I promise you that.

I want to pack out the college hour room.
I want us to have to create new small groups on the first Sunday.
I want us to have too many people desire to serve internationally & locally on some type of mission endeavor this next year.
I want us to have to plan a baptism service the first Sunday this semester because so many of your friends come to faith.
I want us to have a space problem.
I want us to dream and dream big of what God might do in and through us.
I want us to worship like crazy on that Sunday.
I want us to be willing to look foolish for Jesus’ sake on that Sunday & all of them to come…
may we not hold back together… may we not hold back.

I want to be amazed… do you?

Whew!  As you can see, I’m totally stoked that you’re a little over a week away from being here in Waco again. I’ve missed you. Our church has missed you.
Please come soon.

love&live the gospel,

criner

We had Brinner (Breakfast for Dinner) during Small Group last night. Tim Mansour decided to give us a little commentary of our food. It was a ton of fun! We also had a TON of bacon… you can never go wrong with bacon… right!? BTW – I shot this with my Flip MinoHD.

New Brochure 09-10

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

I’ve been tied up the past two days designing our new brochure for the Fall.  It’s taken a little hard work, but we finally got it done.  The brochure will fold in the middle and we’ll pass it out to new students this upcoming year.  So, I thought I’d share it with you (this is for you mom!).

Outside:

This is a real simple design I did for our College Ministry. This will be a small sticker (3″x4.5″) we’ll give away with our T-Shirts {not yet complete} when you make a purchase. Essentially, the sticker will be free: you get what you pay for right?

All proceeds fund our local/global mission endeavors…

enjoy.

What Book Should A Graduate Read

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

I had a good friend from back in the day email me and ask me a pretty common question.  Working with College Students, I’ll occasionally hear from friends, and pastors who are curious as to different ways to influence and train up their students.  I’m completely honored that they would ask… so, here is my response:

QUESTION:
Hey!
I have a question for you…
The senior guys (and girls) Bible study is wanting some suggestions for a study for the fall. They are interested in learning, “How to become a godly man.” I know this is pretty broad. The group is made up of some very smart, very bright, mature believers. About half are kids who have grown up in Christian homes and have a good foundational faith. The other half are all guys who have become believers in the past two years and are very excited and eager to grow in their faith, but they have no family support.

Also…anything that could help transitions them to college?

The guys and girls are hoping to do a study together – but I am looking into girl studies and I didn’t know if you had a suggestions for either a study or a book to read through.

Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks!

MY RESPONSE:
Okay – This is going to sound super cheesy… but THE BEST BIBLE STUDY for students about to enter College is well…. the BIBLE. I know I know… super super cheesy – but it’s true. I would maybe take them through 1 Timothy for it’s right there that they’ll be confronted with who they are, Who they should live their live for, what matters, and how to not waste their lives. 1 Timothy 4 is especially formative.  I would even go as far to suggest that they get an ESV Bible. They have some of the best options for Bibles: Journal Bibles, Study Bibles, Bibles-so-cool-they-fit-in-your-back-pocket-and-feel-really-cool, etc. You can buy them all HERE.  Or just read it online HERE.

I might even encourage them all to go through a book of the Bible together; journal what they read throughout the week and then the ‘study’ time on that particular night is a time to share what God has shown them during that week. This brings accountability, journaling, studying Scripture on a daily basis, prayer – ESSENTIAL disciplines to survive/thrive in college.

That being said: a couple of other suggestions in regards to personal growth and then possibly group discussion/study.

For Personal Devotion:
The Pursuit of God, A. W. Tozer (this book has impacted me more than I’d like to admit… perspective changer).
Living the Cross Centered Life, CJ Mahaney (I give this book away as much as possible… students need to understand the gospel and live it – this book has that at it’s aim).

For Group Study/Transition to College:
Twentysomeone, Craig Dunham and Doug Serven (this was one of the first books that turned my heart to the collegiate generation).
Don’t Waste Your Life, John Piper (everybody should read this book – if not for the title alone)… IN FACT, there are tons of stuff at dontwasteyourlife.com.
Crazy Love, Francis Chan (this book will make you fall in love with Jesus and what he’s done for us more and more and more).

Hope these books help along the way!

enjoy
