Before you make a plan for spiritual formation, define it.

By michaelcriner · Comments (1)
Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Simply, in my observation, spiritual formation is not too different from discipleship in nature. I think the difference would simply be that “spiritual formation” evokes fertile images of growth, slow maturation, and gentle becoming. It is a focused attention upon the heart – what is being stirred in your affections; what your minds attention is focused upon. In my view, “spiritual formation” is about your betterment, your sanctification in the most radical ways of which takes place in the most ordinary places.

Like unto it, discipleship is done with one another in community. You have a discipler. You have someone who is coming along side with you and helping you grow. Spiritual formation is an inward discipline; discipleship is an outward discipline. That being said, I think there is a ton of room for disagreement here… the point is that we are called to follow Jesus.

Thus, this is how I would define spiritual formation: the maturing process of a follower of Jesus, so that they might be sanctified.

Is it necessary for the local church to continually try to enhance the spiritual formation of its congregation?

I think it is imperative for a local church to on regular occasion teach, disciple, lead, form, preach, model, etc. what it means to be a follower of Jesus. It is completely necessary, and if you are not doing this in your local church OR you think it can be done without a plan and therefore will happen naturally, you’re a fool.

Great Links / Reads this Week

Here’s my list of blogs or articles that I think you should read. There really is no other reason why you would read these other than my recommending them… so now, we’ll see the power of my influence.

  1. Matthew Hyatt has a great post about 5 Characteristics of Weak Leaders. He does a great job of summing up weak characteristics among leaders. Many times and in many ways, leaders develop blind spots to their leadership. This is a quick check-up to consider if you’re a leader, or if you’d like to be one.
  2. If you read this article from the Gospel Coalition, you’ll know more about John Piper than he does.
  3. Have you ever wanted your coke can to have a Snap Cap so it wouldn’t become flat over time? Well, here’s you’re chance!
  4. Here is a list of really bad church names… trust me, they’re really bad.
  5. This is a news article that proposes that libraries may be dead in our schools… because of the Kindle. I’m considering switching to a Kindle… but we’ll see if I fork up the cash!

enjoy.

Sunday Morning Reflections / 10.04.09

This Sunday was a tough one mostly due to the monsoon that welcomed each of us as we woke up. Despite the rain we had such a sweet time together. There is no doubt that students are needing a break and in 2 weeks they’ll get it with Fall Break. Below are some of my reflections from this past Sunday:

-a rainy day carries with it the potential to come in drowsy & tired… therefore we NEEDED the Holy Spirit big-time today
-there is something about not having a full band that caused me to listen more intently to the words we were singing… and it was good.
-it’s an honor to have parents of college students join us on Sundays. We learn so much about students when we meet their parents! ;-)
-Jesus.
-you want to find meaning in life? look to Jesus.
-I love that students feel free to come up and ask questions… especially in regards to the Trinity ;-)
-I cannot give you an owl.
-what we do on Sunday mornings is only part of what we do; praying with students about real issues is so vital.
-Jesus is the meaning of life because he is life.
-I am still humbled and amazed that we’ve consistently had a TON of college students each Sunday.
-everything is connected to God.
-it really doesn’t matter what you know if you don’t know what matters.
-this upcoming week we have “you ask” and I’m secretly nervous… BUT PUMPED!!

Sunday Morning Reflections / 8.30.09

Today was quite a CRAZY day at First Woodway. The craziness really began Friday when we had our Leadership Retreat – it was simply the best one yet… no seriously – it was AWESOME – except for having to sleep on the floor at the church/eating too late/entering into the whole weekend tired/and still trying to recover on sleep.

We spent Friday night worshiping & praying together. UNbelievable time (IMO). Saturday was filled with details/planning & recovery. It was a sweet time.

Below are some of my reflections on this morning at College Hour:

-We wouldn’t be where we’re at w/o our Leadership doing what God has called them to do… LEAD.
-Ummm… When you say “FREE lunch” students come out in droves… who wouldn’t want that?
-Greg Foster & Band have done an amazing job leading us in worship through song every Sunday thus far – they need a CD or something so I can take it w/ me throughout the week.
-Having a band on Sunday mornings totally enhances what we’re doing & where we’re going to go this year in our ministry.
-We had to BRING in almost 100 additional chairs into the room – these were extra chairs due to the amount of people in College Hour.
-My wife is AMAZING. I absolutely LOVE her & her servant spirit… Sundays would not be the same w/o her.
-Just b/c you’re in a small group doesn’t mean you’re growing – it just means you’re in the best position to grow.
-Having adults serve in our ministry is so cool!
-I love that students want to stay & help clean up after a lunch… proves their servanthood.
-We want to pray expectant prayers.
-Small Groups are about your sanctification.
-You cannot do life alone.
-Understanding progressive sanctification is becoming more & more important for college students than ever.
-Could we please bring back Arrested Development?!
-Our volunteers ROCKED it… AGAIN.
-I was almost in tears laughing at the small group leaders “special talents”
-I was crying during worship as 300+ students sang w/ everything they had to Jesus… defining moment for sure.
-BTW – this is the LARGEST amount of people in College Hour at First Woodway… in 8 yrs. BLOW YOUR SOCKS AWESOME.
-I think I quoted more movies today than I have ever. Ha!
-Large cannons are cool; & so is He-Man.
-Critical Mass is the beginning of a movement.
-Any time you have the FULL support of your Senior Pastor, the table will be set for success.
-At some point you have to grow up… & today our ministry gre up.

I’m so looking forward to this next week. Brett Gibson will be speaking & I’m totally pumped that he gets to share his vision for missons this upcoming year.

enjoy.

Leadership Retreat

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Friday, August 28th, 2009

We would love for you to be praying for us this weekend. When I say us, I mean the Leadership of our College Ministry. We’re going to be praying together; playing together; & they’ll hear my heart for this upcoming year…

We’ve developed a little booklet for our leadership; it’s called the Sherpa which I think is a ROCKING title that I didn’t come up with. Sherpas are traditionally people of Tibetan descent living on the southern side of the Himalaya Mountains in Nepal and Sikkim. In modern times Sherpas have achieved world renown as expert guides on Himalayan mountaineering expeditions. We want our Leadership to be Sherpa’s for the College Ministry… they’re to be guides for their peers using their gifts and experiences to lead others to new and exciting places.

This quote in the book keeps ringing in my head over and over (hence the ringing):

“Don’t rely too much on labels, for too often they are fables.” – C.H. Spurgeon

ALSO – there is the FREAKING HUGE announcement that we’ll be sharing with them in regards to our (Abigail & my) future. I’M TOTALLY STOKED about it! I’m way more STOKED about this than I was for our first Sunday. No really. I’m FREAKING PUMPED about it.

[And to those of you who think that the announcement has something to do with Abigail & I leaving First Woodway - don't be a hater - that couldn't be further from the truth. There are just some BIG things we're planning for this upcoming year - ESPECIALLY during Spring Break. It's going to be AWESOME!]

enjoy

Sunday Morning Reflections|2.23.09

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Monday, August 24th, 2009

This past Sunday was our first College Hour for the 09-10 year. Let it be known that we (Abigail, our leadership team, our church, our adult leaders, MYSELF) were totally PUMPED & GEARED up for this new year. I’ll be honest, there has never been near this much excitement coming into a school year for our team. I’m not really sure why there was such much excitement… but I think the Spirit just has some pretty incredible things in store for us this upcoming year. Below, I want to share with you some of my impressions from our time together this past Sunday (2.23.09):

  • Don’t waste this semester.
  • Jesus is our agenda.
  • If the social agenda replaces Jesus/the gospel – it’s over for the church.
  • If my personal agenda replaces Jesus/the gospel – it’s over for the church.
  • If our ministry agenda replaces Jesus/ the gospel – it’s over for the church.
  • I see casualties of passionless devotion to Jesus everywhere… except here.
  • Passion when misplaced (not God-glorifying/Christ-exalting/Spirit-breathed) IS the wasted life.
  • There is something greater in this life than my life.
  • College students GET worship… do they (I) get obedience (we’ll talk more about this next week).
  • I love seeing our adults invest their lives into students.
  • Our volunteers (students/adults) rock my face off… we LITERALLY couldn’t do what we do w/o them.
  • I love the fact that I got to share the gospel with over 200 students this past Sunday – it’s the MOST WE’VE EVER HAD!!
  • But, I rejoice more that my name is written in heaven (Luke 10:20)…
  • “How can you avoid the wasted life?  KNOW HIM! I want you to get that, get it?”
  • Sunday may have been the loudest it’s ever been in our room…
  • I think we had more first time guests today than we had coming last year on average… really weird.
  • Leadership retreat is this coming weekend – so pumped to be with those that God has called out to be HIS servants this year!
  • To gain everything in the world and lose Christ is to live your entire life as a slow decent into hell.
  • And LAST – I love my wife.

enjoy.

Church Song Meltdown

My friend Ben Dudley (Community Pastor at UBC) has one of the best self-deprecating video I’ve seen in a long time. He gave me permission to share the video and so I did.

The Wisdom of Mentors

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

I was reading in 1 Kings 12 this morning and a young King Rehoboam has taken power.  The passage describes Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel pleading with him to show mercy towards them and reduce the punishment levied towards them by Solomon.  The people of Israel are associating their lifestyle now to being just like it was in Egypt under Pharaoh.  You can read the references HERE.

So, King Rehoboam gathers around him the elders/old men who stood before Solomon to ask them what he should do… show mercy, or increase the suffering.  He listens to what they (the older men) have to say, which is basically “show mercy and they’ll serve you forever.” Upon hearing this from them, the King “abandons the counsel that the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him.” What did these young men say to the King?  “increase the suffering.”

The King chooses to take the counsel of his young comrades and there is continual hostility between Israel and the King for the remaining time (1 Kings 14:30, 15:6, 15:16). He, being young, thought that he knew better than those who were wiser & older than he.  He failed to listen to those who were older.  Call it arrogance; call it foolish; call it folly – but it’s plain dumb for him to not listen to these men.  He chooses (which BTW, this is all according to God’s plan) to do his own thing and it ends badly for him.

The point?  There is wisdom in mentors if we’re willing to listen.  I am deeply grateful for the men who have taken the time to invest in me… but their investment in me would have been wasted had I not listened to them.
So, to you Rick Cavitt, your investment in me and many other guys has touched God knows how many people.  I will always look up to you… always.

So, to you Andy Dennis, you always pushed me in ways that frustrated me, but grew me… and your love for U2 makes me smile.

So, to you Tom Mosley, you always kept me grounded.  Your zeal and passion for God and His glory causes me to worship Jesus even as I sit here.

So, to you Bud Jones, if it weren’t for you… I very well may have given up on Jesus’ first love.  I love you man – even though you’ll probably never read this.

I plead with you young men and women, find a mentor – and listen to them… listen well friends.  I plead with you older men and women, be a mentor… we need you.

enjoy.

Great Links/Reads this Week

Ed Stetzer shares some wonderful questions for accountability.   He provides some really convicting questions that I think we will try to implement this year – in fact, I’m going to implement it with my accountability partner here in Waco.  (he doesn’t know it yet).

Perry Noble gives us three dangerous prayers. This dude is legit.  Will you pray these with me?

A Wall Street Journal article on why Sunday School’s are closing at many churches in the country.  I have my reasons as to why it’s declining in some churches but I’ll hold those cards close to my chest.

The Resurgence did a post of all the books John Piper has ever written… could I just write one?

enjoy.
