Spiritually Apathetic?

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Throughout the year, I observe questions from college students.  This really shouldn’t be a surprise since I work with college students… and they adore me (sarcasm anyone??).  This is the fourth installment of the semi-annual series of posts of questions from students with my responses. Here is another question posed by a student; and then my response.*

STUDENT:
At the beginning of the summer I was on fire and growing like crazy, but as the days drew on I read (the Bible) less and slept more, it became a chore which it shouldn’t. So it showed me that I am not strong enough by myself and when I try to do things by myself I fall flat on my butt.

So where I am right now it still feels like a chore, I need some direction in reading the Word.

I don’t know what to read, when I try to pick something random it doesn’t go well and I just end up skimming it or I end up reading something that I have already read and skim that.  I actually woke up early today to read and it was really good, because I happened to stumble upon something pertinent to me right now. And I think that it seems like a chore not because I don’t want to do it, but because I spend so much time flipping trying to find what to read and I just get frustrated

I want to go deep and have it permeate all I do, say and think…

So that’s where I am, anything to help?

MY RESPONSE:
A couple of initial responses, then a few suggestions.

It is absolutely not uncommon for someone like yourself (and even me) to go through periods and times where reading the Bible, praying, meditating on Scripture, singing songs to him, reading books about him, looking at art of him – sometimes our love for all that (& him) just goes cold.  It’s frightening really.  Scary even (at least for me).  I mean, we’ve been taught and thought all our lives that our love for Jesus should never grow cold – and those that are lukewarm will be spit out…  So, we try not to even have a hint of that mess in our lives so we won’t be vomited out by Jesus.  Yet, there still remains moments in which we grow cold.

Again, for me at least – it’s quite frightening.  I don’t like it; thus, I fight it.  But more often than not, I continue to grow cold to the things of the Lord and I arrive at a place where I didn’t want to be in nor desire from the beginning to be at.  I think you coined it as “fall flat on your butt.” What then happens is that we feel guilty.  Like big-time guilty… along with a laundry list of frustration.

So, how do we prevent the reading of Scripture; praying; loving Jesus; etc. from becoming a chore.  Besides, nobody LIKES folding laundry, but the know they must, or the room’s going to be in a big mess.  But still… how?

For me, I ask my self constantly this question: “What stirs my affections for Jesus?” (BTW – this question was something I heard Matt Chandler speak towards a long time ago and found similar things on his list that are on mine w/o hearing his list… it was actually quite weird when he listed things that were eerily similar.  He recently posted about this very sermon and you can see what he says at www.dwelldeep.net).

Then I made a list of things that stir my heart’s affections for Jesus:

1. Early mornings and a cup of coffee (splenda and cream please).
-I found that the world is most quiet in the morning hours.  This took some time of adjustment; I mean, I had to go to bed earlier.
2. Listening to Abby sing.
-There is something profound that happens in my heart when she sings to Jesus.  In fact, hearing her sing stirred in my heart before I really even knew her – her voice is glorious.
3. Reading dead mens’ words.
-This is actually something I started after I graduated Seminary.  I purchased John Owen’s entire works and after reading Scripture in the morning, I’ll read a chapter, a page, a paragraph or sometimes just a sentence and there is something that this dead man says that makes my heart more affectionate for Jesus.
4. Walking through Graveyards.
-This was a practice I had early in college inspired by a friend who is studying in Scotland right now.  Walking among the graves truly reminds me of how quick I’m going to go when I go.  (really, it puts me in my place).
5. Being physically active.
-For me recently, it’s been riding my bike.

In his blog post, Chandler includes something else that I hadn’t really thought about.  He listed things that distract him from his affections being stirred.  So, I think is another good step to take, figure out what distracts your affections from Jesus:

1. Staying up late (on tv or online)
- this goes along with waking up early… and coffee.
2. Playing mindless games on a system (PS2, etc) or phone.
3. Sports (too much of it)
4. Being Lazy
5. Sin.

I would first suggest looking at your life and seeing what things stir your heart, what distracts.  What I think you’ll realize is that your list will/may look drastically different from my list or even Chandlers.  That’s okay.  We all tick differently.

ALTHOUGH – I’m afraid that I may not have really answered your original question… so let’s refresh ourselves:

“I need some direction in reading the word.”

Any time I’m at a frustrating point in doing anything like painting, tie-ing my shoes, building something, reading Scripture… I typically just give up.  I’m a quitter.  So, here’s some things that I do to help me when I’m faced with feeling like giving up:

1. I pray.

-Pretty typical I know, and not even really that surprising that I’d say… “you should pray.” But maybe your prayer is something along these lines: “Jesus, help me by the power of your Holy Spirit to receive that which I read; to hear what you’re saying;  to obey where I’m not; to grow in new and profound ways; and to see you more glorious than before.”

2. I begin in a book (of the Bible).

- typically a Pauline Epistle that tends to be shorter than an OT book like Numbers.  Or a shorter gospel like Mark – that is quick, gives details, and is rich in stories about Jesus… also Mark is chronological.  Don’t read the entire deal, just maybe a section at a time, maybe a paragraph, a line; a sentence – and think on it, ask questions about what you read.  Maybe even write it down so you can carry it around.  Here is a link to a place where there is a litany of Bible Reading Plans for you to even consider if you want more structure GO HERE.

3.  I journal about what I’ve read.

-There is nothing that helps me more than to process what I’ve read through.  It may be questions you have about the text.  It may be insights gained from the text.  Within this journaling experience, review how what you’ve read can change you and is changing you.

4. I Memorizing Scriptures.

-Maybe start with passages of the the gospel: 2 Cor. 5:21; Rom. 8:31-34; Is. 53:3-6; Rom. 3:23-26; Rom. 5:6-11; 1 Cor. 15:1-11.  When I begin to memorize it seems to stick with me throughout the day rather than just at the beginning of the day (or end if you like).

5. I remember that in the end, I’m not the teacher of Scriptures, I’m the learner.

-When I place myself below the Scriptures I tend to learn a whole lot more.  I have to constantly remind myself that I’m not the one at the top of the food chain, Jesus is.  So, he’s the teacher, I’m the disciple.  Here’s a quote from www.theResurgence.com on this whole subject: “Because Jesus humbly entered into history as a human being, He had to grow and learn just like we do (Luke 2:52). Subsequently, when we see Jesus frequently quoting Scripture from memory throughout His life, we must infer that He spent considerable amounts of time hearing Scripture, reading Scripture, studying Scripture, and memorizing Scripture.”

Hope this helps.  Let me know if you need any clarification or desire to meet.

for his glory,

criner

My best decision of 2009

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

2009 was filled with decisions… some good – some not so good. I could sit here and list all the good and bad, but you don’t really care about that… right? But, I do want to share the best decision I made in 2009. What was it? I read the entire Bible. That’s right… cover to cover – and in chronological order. This made things a little exciting to read it as close as possible in a specific order… this also made things challenging because I wasn’t able to read the New Testament until October – that was rough.

I know what you’re thinking though – “That’s insane, I could never have done that!” – but really if I can, you can. No, seriously. I had started a blog about the different things you should do to get started on reading the Bible this year, but I stopped because JR Vassar did a WAY better job than I could have ever done. So please, for your own sanctification, go HERE to read some great ideas on how to start your year off on the right foot by reading the entire Bible.

Most Popular for November

Can you believe that it’s December?! November really flew by – I think when you get away from your routine life rushes by. Below are the most popular reads for November:

  1. UPDATE: Abby and the Swine Flu – here I give a great update of Abby, who is pregnant, on how she handled getting the swine flu and how she’s progressed since!
  2. If you feel the need to encourage somebody, do it. – here I share some quick thoughts on encouraging others after one of the best meetings ever with our college staff.
  3. Now matter how much you might want to know a secret, until someone tells you , you just cannot know what it is. – this is a post about what I shared with our First Woodway Christian School students… it’s also about the Bible.
  4. Is it necessary for the local church to continually try to enhance the spiritual formation of its congregation? – this was a response to a question I received from a student…
  5. The very fact that you are reading this proves you can (and should) read your Bible. – here I challenge the thought that “I don’t like to read” specifically in regards to the Bible.

enjoy!

The very fact that you are reading this proves you can (and should) read your Bible.

I hear all the time from people that they “just don’t like to read” specifically in regards to reading the Bible. I’m becoming increasingly impatient with that thought – mostly because most of us do a tremendous amount of reading every day – whether we realize it or not. You actually see on average 490,000 words per day. That’s crazy! Here’s what’s really intense – there are 593,493 words in the Old Testament and 181,253 in the New Testament giving 774,746 words in total. So, practically speaking – if you read every word you saw, in two days you could read the entire Bible. Now that is crazy! Not very practical, but still.

I get it though, you probably don’t read every word you see (I certainly don’t) but you do read more than you think in a day. Just imagine if you counted all the twitter, facebook, text messages, emails, books, and hand-written notes you read in a day. I can only imagine that it would be a lot! This brings up another facet, you enjoy reading… simply because you, me and everyone we know are constantly on our mobile devices reading (or you’re watching the most watched YouTube ever).

So, if you’re one to use the pitiful&lazy excuse that you don’t like to read… you do more of it than you’re aware of. So why not take time to dive into Scripture and listen to what the Lord wants to say to you? Besides, it’s more profitable for you than most the other 100 Trillion words on the Internet (thanks Al Gore).

Be a good steward and read the Scriptures today… like now.

No matter how much you might want to know a secret, until someone tells you, you just cannot know what it is.

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

I’m speaking today at the First Woodway Christian School Chapel. This is probably one of the most difficult challenges I have working at my church. Mostly because it is completely out of my element. I’m really comfortable speaking to college students – I have no clue how to communicate to kids. I once heard it said that if you can communicate with a kid, you can communicate with anyone.

So, today I’m sharing with these students that ‘No matter how much you might want to know the secret, until someone tells you, you just cannot know what it is.’ This is why none of us would know about God unless He revealed Himself to us. The secret is Himself, and thankfully, He’s made himself known! My statement goes something like this: “unless God had decided to show us who He is, unless He had chosen to make known His own life and ways, we simply could know nothing – yes, nothing! – about Him.”

Thus, God has revealed Himself in 3 distinct ways:

  1. The World He has Made
  2. How He made You & Me
  3. The Bible
The ultimate point here is that while we can observe God in His creation – how we can observe God in you and me – ultimately, if it were without His Word (the Bible specifically) we would not really know anything about God. Therefore, it is essential for us, no matter what our age, to read the Bible waiting in anticipation to hear from Him, because our God is a talking God who has spoken to us by His Word. And by virtue, by Him speaking, we grow to become more like Him.

Read the New Testament in 60 Days

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

This past Sunday I challenged our College Leadership to read the New Testament in 60 days… the way the calendar works out, there are 6o+ days left in the year. Thus, you could potentially read the entire New Testament before the end of the year.

Now, don’t be that guy and say “quality over quantity. Therefore, it’s better to read a little than a lot.” Yes and no.

Most of us have never read the entire Bible,

yet we claim that our lives are based on it.

What’s preventing you from at the very least, reading the entire New Testament these last few days of the year? How cool would it be if we all just dove into the Scriptures to see what God might teach us through them? Besides, it’s only 4 chapters a day… you watch 4 TV shows a day, you certainly can read 4 chapters in the Bible!! So, join me/us in this pursuit!

Sunday Morning Reflections / 9.13.09

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Monday, September 14th, 2009

We had another great morning… I tell you what – I love working with College students! Here are some of my reflections from College Hour today:

-It is good for my soul to worship with students.
-Greg & the band’s leadership ROCKS!
-It is SO cool to see our volunteers serve – they don’t complain – they just SERVE.
-It’s good to see people return week after week – it’s AWESOME to see NEW people.
-Unresolved conflict breaks trust; breeds division; and does not build up the church.
-I love the fact that students are so eager to share their story with other students.
-Put your fingers on your neck and find your pulse: you don’t control that.
-Forgiveness frees – bitterness binds.
-So many people brought their roommate for ‘how to change your roommate’ – suttle hint huh?
-We’re expanding our small groups – that’s awesome!!
-I just love our leadership – they really are examples to their peers.
-There is just something about the reading of Scripture that stirs my heart.
-The movement/set-up team blows my mind at how fast they get our room set-up for College Hour.
-Now is the time to seek the Lord.
-Next week is baptisms… SO PUMPED!

Sunday Morning Reflections / 9.6.09

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Monday, September 7th, 2009

Today was a well, not-so-crazy Sunday for us. Mostly because many/if not most students were absent since they have Labor Day off at Baylor Monday. I happen to have the day off as well, and I’m just a little excited about a day full of labor-some activity at the house. The next couple of weekends are jammed full of visitors/family/parties. TOTALLY not complaining, just a reality that before we know it, it’ll be October.

This past Sunday Brett Gibson, International Pastor at First Woodway, shared his heart for what it means to be ‘on mission’ for Jesus… let me just say this: I spent a large part of my afternoon reflecting on some of the things he had to say… below are my reflections from the day:

  • We do not belong to ourselves… we belong to God – MAN is that ever good news to hear!
  • it is always so refreshing to worship with college students
  • “STUDENTS – add to your passion for Christ, understanding.” – Brett Gibson
  • “Everything is a loss in comparison to knowing Jesus Christ…” – Paul
  • THE ABOVE STATEMENT NEVER GETS OLD.
  • “The Bible has little patience for believers… even the demons believe.” -Brett Gibson (OUCH)
  • Reconcile, reconcile, reconcile… did I miss something there?
  • You are a new creation. This is about your personal salvation… BUT it’s about so much more than just that too… it’s also that Jesus is ushering in HIS KINGDOM.
  • By being a new creation, you are marked by something different now.
  • We don’t own the gospel… it owns us.
  • We don’t present a message – we are the message.
  • We don’t need more information… we need transformation.
  • How was Jesus Sent? – By the way of the Cross. Therefore, you must come and die.
  • We missed our adult volunteers… but ADDED more this Sunday – thank the Lord!!

All in all, it was a blessing to be with students and sit under Brett’s incredible teaching – I was rebuked and encouraged. May we engage the world with a heart to reconcile.

Sunday Morning Reflections|2.23.09

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Monday, August 24th, 2009

This past Sunday was our first College Hour for the 09-10 year. Let it be known that we (Abigail, our leadership team, our church, our adult leaders, MYSELF) were totally PUMPED & GEARED up for this new year. I’ll be honest, there has never been near this much excitement coming into a school year for our team. I’m not really sure why there was such much excitement… but I think the Spirit just has some pretty incredible things in store for us this upcoming year. Below, I want to share with you some of my impressions from our time together this past Sunday (2.23.09):

  • Don’t waste this semester.
  • Jesus is our agenda.
  • If the social agenda replaces Jesus/the gospel – it’s over for the church.
  • If my personal agenda replaces Jesus/the gospel – it’s over for the church.
  • If our ministry agenda replaces Jesus/ the gospel – it’s over for the church.
  • I see casualties of passionless devotion to Jesus everywhere… except here.
  • Passion when misplaced (not God-glorifying/Christ-exalting/Spirit-breathed) IS the wasted life.
  • There is something greater in this life than my life.
  • College students GET worship… do they (I) get obedience (we’ll talk more about this next week).
  • I love seeing our adults invest their lives into students.
  • Our volunteers (students/adults) rock my face off… we LITERALLY couldn’t do what we do w/o them.
  • I love the fact that I got to share the gospel with over 200 students this past Sunday – it’s the MOST WE’VE EVER HAD!!
  • But, I rejoice more that my name is written in heaven (Luke 10:20)…
  • “How can you avoid the wasted life?  KNOW HIM! I want you to get that, get it?”
  • Sunday may have been the loudest it’s ever been in our room…
  • I think we had more first time guests today than we had coming last year on average… really weird.
  • Leadership retreat is this coming weekend – so pumped to be with those that God has called out to be HIS servants this year!
  • To gain everything in the world and lose Christ is to live your entire life as a slow decent into hell.
  • And LAST – I love my wife.

enjoy.
