Ben!

Thanks for the comment - I agree that it was a lot of leadership tips/lessons jazzed up which can be and is challenging to say the least... I suppose I would push against the thought that the average pastor has a strong theological motivation. I'm afraid that many don't. I'm afraid for the majority of people who simply stop reading, or stop learning, or stop asking the question "why are we doing what we're doing in the way that we're doing it?" That's dangerous. A lot of pastors need theological undergirding because if you just study the culture and impolite it or re-purpose it without biblical motivations, then you might be more conformed to the pattern of this world rather than transformed by the renewing of your mind.

All in all, may we be faithful to the gardens that God has planted us and may we with much effort engage the culture. Catalyst for sure wants us to engage the culture, and for that - at least we're all trying!

Interesting thoughts, Michael. I had a similar take when my Forge class volunteered at the '08 conference-- it seemed like we were getting some good leadership tips mixed in with a lot of flash. I never really considered the lack of theology, though I think that's by design-- I assume that the average pastor in attendance has strong theological motivations based on their seminary experience and ongoing study. If anything, Catalyst's purpose is to boil down cutting-edge practices from the marketing and management worlds and re-purpose them for church leadership. (It spun of out Maxwell's Injoy stuff, I believe).

Challenged by your vulnerability on not comparing congregations sizes. That's a good lie to fight.

Great idea! Mine are:
Philippians 3: 7-11 as well!
2 Corinthians 12:9-10 - But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore i will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. for when I am weak, then I am strong."
John 14:6 - Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth,a nd the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Wes, thanks for the comment. We came to this conference for the same exact reason. I guess you would wish that it weren't this bad. But you're right - we need to be pushed and probed and that helps us learn. A lot of it depends on how you're approaching a conference. Are you looking for encouragement, ideas, inspiration, etc.? Then pick your conference accordingly.

Hope to see you today!

Great post Michael. I walked away yesterday feeling the same way. I chose to go to catalyst this year over t4g and other conferences that would have lined us much closer to what I believe for a reason. I did it because I feel you grow best when you are taken out of your comfort zone. You must think through why you don't agree, which strenghens what you believe, or you are stretched to understand a concept in a new way. There was a great deal that I wasn't thrilled with but I'm glad I came.
