Take the Bible Seriously #QUOTE

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

To stay away from Christianity because part of the Bible’s teaching is offensive to you assumes that if there is a God he wouldn’t have any views that upset you. Does that belief make sense? . . . If you don’t trust the Bible enough to let it challenge and correct your thinking, how could you ever have a personal relationship with God? In any truly personal relationship, the other person has to be able to contradict you.

Tim Keller, The Reason for God

Every Christian should read this book.

Why we need to study God from J. I. Packer #QUOTE

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

We are cruel to ourselves if we try to live in this world without knowing about the God whose world it is and who runs it. The world becomes a strange, mad, painful place, and life in it a disappointing and unpleasant business, for those who do not know about God. Disregard the study of God, and you sentence yourself to stumble and blunder through life, blindfold[ed], as it were, with no sense of direction and no understanding of what surrounds you.

J. I. Packer, Knowing God, 20th anniv. ed. (Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity, 1993), 14-15

Worship God through this video of Yosemite and Psalm 19 #VIDEO

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Monday, February 27th, 2012

Yosemite HD from Project Yosemite on Vimeo.

The above video caused me to reflect on Psalm 19 and worship God – my hope is that it would do the same for you.

[19:1] The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
[2] Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
[3] There is no speech, nor are there words,
whose voice is not heard.
[4] Their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for the sun,
[5] which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
[6] Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them,
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
[7] The law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the LORD is sure,
making wise the simple;
[8] the precepts of the LORD are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the LORD is pure,
enlightening the eyes;
[9] the fear of the LORD is clean,
enduring forever;
the rules of the LORD are true,
and righteous altogether.
[10] More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.
[11] Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
[12] Who can discern his errors?
Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
[13] Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
let them not have dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.
[14] Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight,
O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

(Psalm 19 ESV)

Sinclair Ferguson on why highlighting the cross is essential [QUOTE]

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Saturday, February 11th, 2012

As I was prepping my series of teaching for this upcoming series for our college ministry (THE EXCHANGE), I came across this quote as to the necessity for such a series of messages:

More than thirty years ago in his landmark book Knowing God, J. I. Packer noted, “If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thoughts of being God’s child, and having God as his Father.” I would add today: “If you want to judge how well a person understands the gospel, ask him what he makes of the death of Christ, and what the message of the cross is.” The real Christian answers that while the message of the cross is foolishness to some and a stumbling blog to others, to Christians it is the saving wisdom and power of God (1 Cor. 1:18-24). The confession of the real Christian is, “Far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” (Gal. 6:14).. We need to understand that the cross stands at the center and heart of the gospel. Without it there is no gospel.

You may not have 17 minutes to watch this, but the point is clear: racial harmony IS biblical. May we be diligent to live our lives out of our convictions and not convenience. Grace to you all…

Dietrich Bonhoeffer on the necessity of a community devoted to truth [QUOTE]

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

“The Christian needs another Christian who speaks God’s Word to him. He needs him again and again when he becomes uncertain and discouraged, for by himself he cannot help himself without belying the truth.”

Which adventure will you choose? (Bible Reading Plans)

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Friday, December 30th, 2011

When I was a kid, I religiously read the Choose Your Own Adventure books (see http://www.cyoa.com). I loved the non-reality of making the “wrong decision” (which lead to death), or the “right decision” (leading to success, or the next page) the book brought me. It was well, and adventure. Psalm 1:1-2 states:

        Blessed is the man

                who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,

        nor stands in the way of sinners,

                nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

        but his delight is in the law of the LORD,

                and on his law he meditates day and night.

Obviously, we could read more about this verse but for the sake of time, I want to jump straight to it’s application. The blessed person is the one who takes delight in the law of the Lord by meditating day and night on the law. In view of the context, he referring to the Torah, but I think it’s application bears out on for us the entire counsels of the Word.

The beginning of a new years affords us the opportunity to reflect on what we will delight in throughout 2012. My hope is that you would consider delighting in the majesty of God in His Word. There are magnificent things in the Bible, we just have to observe them as we watch the Holy Spirit revive our heart’s affection and mind’s attention to the glory of the God who made us.

So, it’s time to choose your own adventure through the Bible this year. You know your needs and your heart better than I, and there are numerous reading plans through the Bible you could take this year. But I encourage you to pick one, and stick to it, because as Winston Churchill once said; “he who fails to plan is planning to fail.”

Which adventure will you choose?

M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan (This plan is based on the M’Cheyne reading system, featuring four different readings each day; two passages from the Old Testament, one from the New Testament, and one from either the Psalms or the Gospels. In one year, you read the Old Testament once and the New Testament and Psalms twice.): http://www.esv.org/assets/pdfs/rp.one.year.tract.pdf

ESV Study Bible Reading Plan (This plan includes readings from four sections of the Bible each day: the Psalms and Wisdom Literature, Pentateuch and History of Israel, Chronicles and Prophets, and Gospels and Epistles.): http://www.esv.org/assets/pdfs/rp.esv.study.bible.pdf

5x5x5 Reading Plan (Read through the New Testament in 5 days a week, 5 minutes a day.): http://www.navpress.com/images/pdfs/9781576839768.pdf

Read it Historically (the order in which they were written): http://www.blueletterbible.org/reader/daily/PDF/Plan5.pdf

Read it Chronologically (the order in which they took place): http://www.esv.org/assets/pdfs/rp.chronological.pdf

Hope this helps as you plan how you engage the Scriptures in 2012!

Some end-of-the-year thoughts from @JohnPiper [VIDEO]

By michaelcriner · Comments (0)
Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Dr. Piper asks some insightful questions that I felt helpful. Among them:

Have I lived up to what I teach?
Have I become lazy?
Am I more comfortable with my stuff that I have diminished Christ from my life?

Please watch… and reflect on how 2012 might be different.
