A few weeks ago (months?) we were walking through the idea on Sunday mornings about generosity. Sometimes we only hear about generosity during Thanksgiving/Christmas, and a building campaign. Well, I wanted to avoid those seasons and speak on it in February. So we did.
Somewhere along the lines, I made the statement that “God is a cheerful giver.” I didn’t give any specific reference to this in the Word, and left it at that. God’s generous! Moving on! Well, about a month later, someone asked me if I could reference this idea, and so I shared with them a couple of examples:
He REWARDS those who seek him (Heb 11:6)
If you lack wisdom, God gives GENEROUSLY to those who ask Him (James 1:2-18)
John 3:16 is even an example, but I would recommend this translation as it puts the emphasis in THE WAY God loved us -“For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” (HCSB)
Ephesians 1:3-14 (one sentence in the Greek) “God has RICHLY blessed us.”
Matthew 7:11 – God gives better gifts than good dads give to their children.
1 Timothy 6:17 – Focus on God, not riches – God who RICHLY supplies….
Rom 10:12 – God gives richly to all who call on Him.
Now, the problem is that some of this is not about money, but about the TRUE and RICH blessing – Jesus.
My ultimate point here is that God never asks us to do something that He was unwilling to do. He gave generously, He gave His Son! How much more then are we to graciously be generous with all that we have – not just our money, but our time, talents, efforts, work, service, etc. And it’s never obligatory – it’s motivated out of love! Which is exactly what Jesus did.
So as you go today, remember to be generous, like God. God is indeed a cheerful giver.
